One of the ways we multiply young Christian leaders at Rock the World is through our retreats and conferences, like re:mix (see first article), and one is through supporting our trainees, like Holly Rankin Zaher (see second article). We hope you will join us at an upcoming event or join one of our core training programs, so you can help us ignite a spiritual awakening among young people on every continent!

Student Discipleship Minister at St. George's, Nashville, TN
I still remember sitting in a training class for "compression planning" taught by a youth ministry guru at Rock the World. The "compression planning" process, which Disney made famous, was the best technique that I've ever used to plan. As a naturally collaborative leader, it allows me to gather everyone's voices into one common picture. The process allows people who are audio, kinesthetic, and visual learners to thrive. It finds creative ways to incorporate both the extrovert and the introvert among us. And it has been one of the best planning tools in my youth minister's toolbox.
With my high opinion of "compression planning," you won't be surprised that I immediately began to plan to host such an event with my leadership team when I arrived on the scene as youth minister at St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville, TN. After I had met with a number of leaders (pictured above, dressed up in togas with me at a retreat) to discern what was next for the youth ministry, I scheduled compression planning as the culmination of that discernment process.
I needed to bring in someone outside the church who had the credentials to lead such a session. I was thrilled when Whis Hays agreed to lead this session and even more excited when he suggested that he bring two college students from Rock the World's Josiah Project with him to act as participating outsiders. One of them was even from Nashville!
Whis' amiable presence, youth ministry knowledge, keen insight on church culture, and skills as a compression planning facilitator were immensely helpful during this process. Throughout the day we prayed and planned, discussed and laughed, and came away with the three key initiatives we are focusing on this year.
I'm so grateful for Rock the World and the skills this ministry has provided for me as a minister - especially for the support I continue to receive even now, 12 years after graduating from Rock the World's core programs! |
